114 of our Year 9 and 10 students took part in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Intermediate Maths Challenge last term - a 60 minute, 25 multiple-choice challenge. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think. During the first round our pupils achieved 7 Gold, 11 Silver and 18 Bronze certificates - quite an achievement in itself.
However, taking it one step further, four students' high scores allowed them to qualify for the second round of the challenge - memorably called the 'Pink Kangaroo'. These follow-on rounds are also 60 minute, 25 multiple choice challenges, but entry to this second round is by invitation based on the qualifying score - so only the top scoring students in the UK are invited to take part. Two of these students even went on to achieve merit certificates!
Numeracy Lead Practitioner Ms O'Brien said: "Participating in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge is more than just a test; it's an opportunity for our students to flex their mathematical muscles and showcase their problem-solving prowess. Our students have all done phenomenally well and we are really proud of their achievements."
