A record number of teams entered this year’s competition, with Alexandra Park Primary taking home the title. Students from Cheadle Heath, Lark Hill, Meadowbank, Alex Park and St Matthews’ primaries went head to head over a number of rounds, which included:
Round 1 – Mental Arithmetic
Teams worked to solve three mental arithmetic questions of varying type and difficulty in the time allowed. Each member of the team listened to a song, writing down the instructions given before calculating their answer. As a team they shared their answers and methods before agreeing on their final answer
Round 2 – Group Task Worded Problems – Pupils needed to use reasoning and problem-solving skills to answer each of the questions. For a variety of questions the teams needed to work together to solve problems. This round involved lots of strategic planning as well as mathematics: a race against the clock with lots of lively activity and excitement.
Round 3 - Shuttle - Teams competed against the clock to correctly answer a series of four questions. Each team was divided into Pair A and Pair B.
Round 4 - Crossnumber -Similar to a crossword but with numerical answers. Teams worked in pairs; one pair has the across clues and the other pair has the down clues. The teams work independently to complete the grid using logic and deduction.
Maths Teacher Ms O’Brien said: “We had a lovely morning with the Year 5s, and we were so impressed with their enthusiasm and aptitude in tackling each round.
“Congratulations to everyone who took part – and we look forward to seeing if the title can be successfully defended now at next year’s event!”
